Are you selecting - The Right Engineer For Your Project?

Selecting and retaining an engineer is often the most important step an Owner takes toward completing a successful project. Recognizing this, ACEC of Maine recommends Qualification Based Selection, known as QBS. This process is endorsed by the Federal (government, the State of Maine and many municipalities and private owners. We believe that technical competence, managerial ability, and professional integrity are among the most important criteria that should be considered when selecting an engineer, and these factors can be best determined through the QBS process as follows:

  1. Prepare a description of the proposed project.
  2. Request qualifications from a number of engineering firms.
  3. Select three to five firms who appear to be the most qualified and conduct separate interviews with each.
  4. Contact the firms' recent clients and references.
  5. Rank the firms in order of qualifications.
  6. Select the highest rated firm for detailed negotiation of scope of service, contractual terms, and compensation.
  7. If agreement cannot be reached with the selected firm, formally conclude negotiations with the firm and proceed to negotiate with the next highest ranked firm.

Continue this process until an agreement is reached.
ACEC of Maine can provide you with more information about QBS upon request.
